My goal is to learn something new each day. Especially, during my career transition. The questions I ask myself are: ‘what skills do I have that will distinguish me from others?’ ‘How do I communicate my skills to match the job requirements?’ These are some of the questions that were answered with this session.
Mr. Alaniz introduced the website, www.careeronestop.org. This website will help you identify what skills you need in a particular career. To get familiar with this website, I recommend you select the site map link. One can find this link at the bottom of the screen. For your specific career choice, Frank suggests you read such topics as the Wage Data, State and National Trends, and Labor Market Information.
Frank recommends this simple exercise to identify your job skills. Once you have located the job tasks, highlight those skills you know. With another color highlighter, identify those tasks you are lacking. Lastly, using a third color highlighter, identify those tasks you do not like about the job. One should pay closer attention to those skills you are lacking and those you do not like about the specific job. By using the website, one can acquire some job training to make you more marketable to an employer. Furthermore, Mr. Alaniz suggests that you visit a Career Counselor at any Career Center to further your job transition.
Frank Alaniz is the Workforce Development Supervisor for the State of Missouri’s Division of Workforce Development. The Missouri Career Center has provided employment services to over 10,000 Businesses and 390,000 job seekers since July, 2009.
